Acreditava-se que neurônios situados no início do córtex visual fossem analizadores espacialmente restritos do mundo visual. Contudo, nos últimos anos, tem se tornado cada vez mais claro que a resposta de um único neurônio é criticamente influenciada pelo estímulo apresentado fora do campo receptivo clássico. Portanto, caracterizar a codificação de estímulos complexos em nível de um único neurônio tem se provado uma tarefa difícil. Utilizando técnicas de imageamento óptico e registros de multi-eletrodo, nós investigamos representações corticais em nível de população. A abrangente informação espacial obtida pela técnica de imageamento é complementada pela precisão temporal dos registros eletrofisiológicos feitos em regiões corticais de interesse identificadas previamente. De forma a investigar a contribuição de diferentes circuitos cortico-corticais para representações corticais nós aplicamos técnicas de desativação.
